On June 27, 2011, the Chadron Police Department was called to a local business in reference a person using checks to buy items on a closed account. Officers responded to the business and conducted an investigation into the report. During the course of the investigation, it was learned that a female identified as Mary Whitcomb (age 34) of Chadron had entered the local business on two separate occasions on June 26, 2011 and made large purchases. The items purchased included electronics and tools totaling over $2,300.00. As a result of the investigation, officers from the Chadron Police Department obtained a search warrant to search Whitcomb’s Chadron residence for the purchased merchandise. During the search, officers located high dollar pieces of electronics Whitcomb had purchased on the closed checking account. Whitcomb was not at her residence at the time of the search and officers are currently looking for Whitcomb’s whereabouts. The Chadron Police Department is also looking for an associate of Whitcomb’s; 34 year old Joseph Roan Eagle, for questioning regarding this incident. The Chadron Police Department would like to ask local business in the Panhandle area to notify the Chadron Police Department, or their local law enforcement agency, if they have contact with Whitcomb or Roan Eagle. The Chadron Police Department also has information that Whitcomb and Roan Eagle may be traveling through out the Panhandle of Nebraska and the Black Hills area of South Dakota. “UPDATE” The Chadron Police Department in cooperation with other local agencies has further discovered that Whitcomb and or Roan Eagle have been passing additional checks on this closed account in Gordon, Gering, and Scottsbluff Nebraska with the total defrauded amount approaching $10,000. Targeted businesses types seem to be hardware stores and sporting goods establishments. Included are the most recent available photographs of both suspects. Again if you see either of these individuals please contact your local law enforcement agency or the Chadron Police Department at 308-432-0510.

The Chadron Police Department would like to advise everyone to be cautious about locking up vehicles after a recent string of thefts in the Chadron area. On Sunday, the Department responded to three calls of stolen bicycles, six calls of thefts from within vehicles, and one call of a stolen motor vehicle.

The Department believes these incidents to be related, and all occurred during the evening hours of March 19, 2011. These crimes are being actively investigated, and other jurisdictions are cooperating in an attempt to locate stolen items, which include electronics, money and purses.

A press release from the Chadron PD advises people never to leave keys to motor vehicles in that vehicle, and to lock vehicles even if parked in the owner’s driveway. It is also recommended to conceal electronics kept within the vehicle so they are out of sight, and, if possible, take them with when the vehicle is left unattended.

Anyone noticing suspicious activity is encouraged to report that to the Department as soon as possible.
